This week has seen the end of our fishing season and we celebrated this by recognising our attendees commitment and contribution by presenting ‘Fishing Achievement’ awards.  Our connection with Widdows Fisheries will continue out of season as we offer grounds maintenance support which will see our attendees clearing, weeding, mowing and pruning.  We are pleased to announce that this work has already begun.

Wood Workshop

Our attendees have been busy in the workshop this week producing bird table tops.  This project has allowed our attendees to demonstrate their skills and provide evidence towards their next Open Awards certificate.  As well as Construction attendees at STEPScic are currently working towards Open Awards certificates in Art and Design, Gardening, Vehicle Cleaning and Valeting and Food Preparation.  We look forward to celebrating everyone’s achievement in the new year at our annual awards event.

Blackpool Tower Dungeon

Our attendees thoroughly enjoyed the cast of actors, scenes and special effects that welcomed us at Blackpool Tower Dungeons.  We had such great fun getting involved in the different scenes with some of us even confessing our crimes in front of the Judge!  Following our escape from the dungeons we all enjoyed a fabulous lunch of fish and chips before taking time to enjoy the promenade and do a bit of shopping.  We would like to thank Blackpool Tower Dungeons for their warm welcome.

Dragon Boat Race 2018

It is with great pleasure that we were able to support Think Ahead today with their annual fundraising event the Dragon Boat Race which was held at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club.  The event brought together a number of local businesses for a fun and competitive afternoon which raised money and awareness for those affected by stroke.  Director Terry Mann and Senior Support Worker Ian Young represented STEPScic and joined representatives from Think Ahead, Embrace and Express IT to become the ‘Wellbeing Warriors’.   The first race saw the ‘Wellbeing Warriors’ become victors as they powered their way to the finishing line and went on to finish 5th overall.  A huge congratulations to Leigh Business Group who had the fastest time on the day and were the overall winners.  The event was attended by our attendees who enjoyed being part of the occasion and cheering on their team. We would like to thank Think Ahead for inviting us and to congratulate them on hosting such a successful event.

Curry Club

Our cooking sessions encourage our attendees to choose a recipe, go shopping for the ingredients, use a calculator to add up the cost, pay at the checkout, prepare then cook the ingredients and finally enjoy the meal.  Today, curry was the speciality of the day with both a meat and a vegetarian option prepared.  Our attendees have enjoyed developing skills and working together as part of a team throughout the shopping and food preparation process.  A very successful and delicious meal was enjoyed by all.

As part of our community presence our garden maintenance team began work around the surrounding areas of the bowling green at Rose Bridge Community Club. They have worked extremely hard and have already made a huge difference to what will be an ongoing project. We would like to share the team’s success as we are extremely proud of what they have achieved so far. Over the next few weeks we will be looking to re pot the containers in order to bring some colour to the area. The project is currently seeking donations of plants, bark, soil and flowers. We will keep you updated on our progress over the coming weeks.

Nick Park and his Wallace and Gromit creations have been the most recent inspiration in our art sessions.  Our attendees have worked independently with plasticine to create a range of fish, jellyfish and sharks.  We have put our individual pieces together to create an ‘Under the Sea’ theme and have brought our scene to life using animation software.  Our attendees demonstrated great teamwork, concentration, computer skills, imagination and social skills as they worked.

Football and Cricket

We have had another fabulous day today promoting health and wellbeing through fun physical activity.  Our attendees have enjoyed developing their football skills with Wigan Athletic Community Trust at Rose Bridge Community Club with whom we have exclusive access.  We would like to thank both of these organisations for their continued support.  Our football match was followed by a fun and friendly game of cricket on the large field that is available to us.  We witnessed some excellent individual achievements with bowling, batting, runs and catches but we were most impressed with the excellent camaraderie and sportsmanship within the team.

Day at Haydock Racecourse

A fabulous day at the races was experienced on 5th July by some of our attendees.  We visited Haydock racecourse in the glorious sunshine for the afternoon meet.  The comfortable surroundings of the County Enclosure enabled our attendees to relax and enjoy the races whilst having a fantastic view of the finishing line.  We would like to thank Jockey Harrison Shaw who took time out to meet our attendees before his race.  Harrison then went on the ride his horse ‘Miss Sheridan’ to 1st place over the finishing line.  It was with great pleasure that we were able to meet him again after his race so that we could congratulate him on his success.  This was an amazing experience and a first for our attendees to meet a Jockey.  This day was a great success as some personal goals have been achieved by our attendees.

We would love to hear from you
