As part of our community presence our garden maintenance team began work around the surrounding areas of the bowling green at Rose Bridge Community Club. They have worked extremely hard and have already made a huge difference to what will be an ongoing project. We would like to share the team’s success as we are extremely proud of what they have achieved so far. Over the next few weeks we will be looking to re pot the containers in order to bring some colour to the area. The project is currently seeking donations of plants, bark, soil and flowers. We will keep you updated on our progress over the coming weeks.

Nick Park and his Wallace and Gromit creations have been the most recent inspiration in our art sessions.  Our attendees have worked independently with plasticine to create a range of fish, jellyfish and sharks.  We have put our individual pieces together to create an ‘Under the Sea’ theme and have brought our scene to life using animation software.  Our attendees demonstrated great teamwork, concentration, computer skills, imagination and social skills as they worked.

Football and Cricket

We have had another fabulous day today promoting health and wellbeing through fun physical activity.  Our attendees have enjoyed developing their football skills with Wigan Athletic Community Trust at Rose Bridge Community Club with whom we have exclusive access.  We would like to thank both of these organisations for their continued support.  Our football match was followed by a fun and friendly game of cricket on the large field that is available to us.  We witnessed some excellent individual achievements with bowling, batting, runs and catches but we were most impressed with the excellent camaraderie and sportsmanship within the team.

Day at Haydock Racecourse

A fabulous day at the races was experienced on 5th July by some of our attendees.  We visited Haydock racecourse in the glorious sunshine for the afternoon meet.  The comfortable surroundings of the County Enclosure enabled our attendees to relax and enjoy the races whilst having a fantastic view of the finishing line.  We would like to thank Jockey Harrison Shaw who took time out to meet our attendees before his race.  Harrison then went on the ride his horse ‘Miss Sheridan’ to 1st place over the finishing line.  It was with great pleasure that we were able to meet him again after his race so that we could congratulate him on his success.  This was an amazing experience and a first for our attendees to meet a Jockey.  This day was a great success as some personal goals have been achieved by our attendees.

We have seen great success in our photography sessions with some fabulous images being created.  These sessions have allowed our attendees to develop work based on particular themes or subject matters of their choice.  Practical experience with the camera on location is then developed back at Ashland house where our attendees view and digitally manipulate their own photographs.  Presentation of their final images in their own portfolio of work encourages pride in their achievements and we look forward to them choosing their favourite image for exhibiting in the near future.

Sports Day

Our summer sports day took place today at Rose Bridge Community Club.  We had a fantastic time with our attendees competing against each other in sprint, egg and spoon, bean bag and obstacle races then a traditional tug of war brought our events to a close.  It was great to see everyone taking part and we even had some healthy competition amongst the staff.  The blue team were the winners of the day as they had scored the most points from all events.  It was agreed by everyone that this was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and was successful in achieving our objectives of promoting exercise for health and wellbeing, teamwork and social skills.

We have been busy growing peas, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and strawberries over at our polytunnel.  We are pleased to announce that our peas and potatoes are now ready to eat and the tomatoes, carrots and strawberries will be ready soon.  The fruit and vegetables that we produce are used in our cooking sessions and promote an understanding of from farm to fork.

Another successful fishing session for our attendees last week, with Carp and Bream being the catch of the day.  Well done everyone!  We would like to thank Widows Fisheries at Spring View, Wigan for providing a stunning location and always making us welcome.

During his review one of our attendees expressed that he would like to experience camping, therefore today we have created our very own camping experience. Our attendees were introduced to pitching a tent and we played outdoor games including ring toss, cricket and jenga. We have enjoyed a BBQ lunch and smores to finish and have had a fantastic day in the great outdoors.
